Salve! Welcome to Roman Workshop, the place where The Roman Empire and Roman Britain meets primary schools across the country. Roman Workshop consists of a school visit that is a tailor-made unit of work that has been developed in-line with the new 2014 History Curriculum. The workshop caters for up to 3 classes (all 3 classes benefit from talks/presentations and activities throughout the entire school day).
Heil og sæl! Do you want the children in your school to experience the Viking shield wall, battle tactics and a day in the life of a Norseman? Do you want them to receive expert-level knowledge and handle authentic, accurate artefacts? Well look no further!
Let me take you back to the Victorian Era (1837 - 1901). A harsh disciplinarian of a schoolmaster is wielding his brass-tipped cane in front of a class of 'unruly and unkempt children'. He enforces strict discipline through the use of the 'back straightener', the 'dunce hat' and the 'finger stocks'. The learning is by rote, on slate boards; learning the three R's: Reading, wRiting and Dictation, and Arithmetic. Sounds good doesn't it? Well we think so anyway! Schools I have visited have complained to me that their Victorian trips or workshops from other providers just didn't hit the mark when it came to realism. Well, I can promise you, realism will be on the cards when it comes to lesson time with the schoolmaster during Victorian Workshop!
